‘Retiring’ Khanal vies for presidency

Former CPN-UML chairman and prime minister (PM) Jhala Nath Khanal has thrown his hat into the ring for the post of president.

Speaking to reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport on return from Iran on Tuesday, Khanal remarked that big responsibilities like the President should not be repeated on a single individual. His comments have come amidst talks that President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will be given a second term.

He, however, claimed that he will not show desperation for the post of president and reiterated that he is ready for any responsibility the party may give recognizing his contribution.

Khanal, 67, will not be eligible for executive office after three years as per the party statute that sends its leaders into retirement after 70 years.

UML Chairman KP Oli and CPN (Maoist Center) are expected to take turns as PM for the next five years as per the agreement reached while forming the left alliance before the election.
