Left alliance has picked CPN (Maoist Center) leader and former deputy prime minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara as its candidate for speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR).
The influential Maoist leader has headed information and communication, foreign, home and finance ministries in different governments in the past.
He was elected to the parliament in the first parliamentary election in 1991 after restoration of democracy in 1990 on a Sanyukta Janamorcha ticket.
Mahara looks certain to win the election as the left alliance of CPN-UML and Maoist Center together commands almost two-third majority in the HoR.
Nominations for the election for HoR speaker will be filed on Friday.
Nepali Congress (NC) has yet to decide whether it will field candidate for speaker or not.
