Communists won as NC left 75% of field empty: Gagan Thapa

Nepali Congress (NC) leader Gagan Thapa on Tuesday has presented a 51-page report at the central committee meeting for review of election and future course of the party. Presenting the report prepared with help of Pradeep Paudel, Chandra Bhandari and other leaders, Thapa said the communists won the election after NC left the 75 percent of the field empty. "The field was ours, rule ours and even the game ours. Did they play very well? No. But our electoral results naturally started to deteriorate further as we left a large portion of the field empty and were limited to a small part. We could not raise questions about any of their ideological aspects," the report presented by Thapa states. While accepting that the communists capitalized on the mistakes by NC while in the government, he pointed that NC could not publicize the mistakes by communists while they were in the government and added that NC has been left behind in social issues. The report also argues that the party cannot be revived without changing the system wherein active members elected the leaders, and says the party will become everyone's if general members were allowed to elect the leaders. "We could not bring in new persons into the party in the past 26 years," the report says. "We would have won even if all the rest of the parties had come together if we had increased our popular vote by just 12 percentage points during the period. We would not have to argue that we lost after the communists united." Thapa has also opined the party should not be operated solely on the ideologies of BP Koirala. Pointing that BP himself was not clear about the economic policies due to the focus on political issues, he opined that NC is still confused on what kind of economic policies it should pursue.
