Minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang has apologized for his comments on Nepali female students going to Bangladesh to study MBBS.
"I must apologize to those who have been hurt by my comments," Minister Tamang told Setopati and added that the ministry will soon issue a statement with his apology.
Speaking at a program organized by Practice International Academy in Chuchchepati in Kathmandu on Friday, Tamang had claimed that Nepali girls studying MBBS in Bangladesh have to sell themselves to get the certificate.
"I will now reveal a story. I have heard that our daughters who go to study in Bangladesh have to somehow sell themselves to get a certificate of doctor," Tamang said during the program. "We send our daughters abroad to study. But they can't acquire certificates there without yielding themselves."
"We have some information. There are some representative incidents. They must be investigated," he said when asked on what grounds he claimed that Nepali girls are not getting certificates without selling themselves. "The grounds on which I spoke will gradually be revealed. There are some representative incidents but this hurt others. I am, therefore, preparing a press statement," he added.
Bringing out the context of a few students committing suicide in Bangladesh, he claimed that he wanted to warn Nepali daughters to ensure they do not suffer violence. He, however, conceded that he has to apologize over the comments as they hurt others.
