Chitwan locals demand for closing limestone factory

People of Kolar at Kalika municipality-9 in Chitwan have called for closing the limestone factory based in their locality, citing possibility of its adverse effects on their territory and threat to their overall life.

The factory operated by the Starline Industries Pvt Ltd is capable of destroying local drinking water and irrigation projects and posing a threat to historic site Upardanggadhi, they said.

However, Starline Industries representative Ishwari Marasini claimed that it has taken preventive measures to avoid possibilities of such risks in the future. According to him, physical infrastructures have been constructed here at a cost Rs 25 million to keep areas adjoining the mines factory safe.

Kalika municipality-9 ward chair Him Bahadur Chhetri said they were told by municipality mayor Khumnarayan (Gopi) Shrestha that the municipality was not in the position of stopping the factory activities as the right to take a policy-level decision to this regard was of the Department of Mines and Geology.
