At least 890 people die and 1,771 are injured every year in Nepal due to natural disasters, said data with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). Property equivalent to Rs 1.31 billion is destroyed every year and 132,161 houses get affected.
"Twelve types of natural calamities occur in Nepal including fire, flooding, landslide, lightning, storm, hailstorm, avalanche and cold wave. A large amount of human and physical loss is incurred every year. So awareness of disaster management is needed," said Chief of ADPC, Nepal Man Bahadur Thapa talking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti.
Approximately 22,216 natural disasters occurred in the past four decades, injuring 79,702 people and affecting 5,947,268 houses.
Meanwhile, training of disaster management preparedness has been organized in Birtamod, Jhapa. A total of 30 people from Jhapa, Taplejung and Sunsari participated in the instruction organized jointly by Birat Community Study Center and Upliftment Development Center with economic support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a private foundation founded by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
The training will also be held in all seven provinces, it has been told.
