The police recovered 5.6 kilograms of gold from the cowshed of Suraj Tiruwa at Amarpur in Shukhlaphanta Municipality-11 early Friday morning. The gold was hidden by the same person who hid the 18 kilograms of gold in the house of Shankar BK in Punarbas Municipality-2 of Kanchanpur that was seized by the police earlier on Thursday.
A joint team of Kanchanpur Police and Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police recovered the 5.6 kilograms of gold hidden in two pouches inside a pit in the cowshed at one Friday morning, according to the Area Police Office, Jhalari.
A senior CIB officer told Setopati that both the caches of gold are owned by Indian smugglers. The Nepali driver of the smugglers fled to Nepal with the vehicle after knowing that there was gold in it. "He hid 18 kilograms of gold in the house of his younger brother's in-laws and kept 5.60 kilograms in his own house. He also seems to have used some quantity of the gold," the CIB officer added.
The driver's younger brother serves for the Nepal Police.
The CIB officer claimed that the gang of smugglers came to Kanchanpur a few days back and took the vehicle after the driver came to Nepal. "They returned back only with the vehicle. They would also have claimed for the gold if it were legal. We received information then and initiated investigation," the officer revealed.
A team including SP of CIB Sudip Giri, Chief of Kailali Police SP Aabhushan Timsina, DSP of Metropolitan Police Crime Division Rugam Kunwar and officers under Kanchanpur Police investigated about the smuggled gold.
Kanchanpur Police will hold a press conference later on Friday to reveal about the details.
