Left alliance candidate Krishna Bahadur Mahara will be unanimously elected speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) after the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) decided on Friday to not field any candidate for the post.
NC Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma told Setopati that the party has decided to not field candidate for the post with confidence that humble personality and non-partisan behavior of the speaker will further boost the dignity of the parliament and the parliamentary system. Sharma claimed that unanimous election of HoR speaker will mark a happy beginning for the newly elected parliament.
CPN (Maoist Center) leader and former deputy prime minister Maoist leader has headed information and communication, foreign, home and finance ministries in different governments in the past.
He was elected to the parliament in the first parliamentary election in 1991 after restoration of democracy in 1990 on a Sanyukta Janamorcha ticket.
