Hand over weapons or face action: PM Oli warns Chand-led CPN

'Referendum on territorial integrity is not possible'

Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has warned the Netra Birkam Chand-led CPN to hand over the illegal arms or face action.
Addressing the last meeting of the winter session of House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday, PM Oli reiterated that the government will not back off from the ban on destructive activities of the party.
He urged the party cadres to hand over the weapons warning of action for failing to do so. “You may as well come and hand over the arms. The government knows how to take them back if you don’t submit.”
He said the government will take measures to control the party’s activities if convincing does not work. “This is a government with two-third majority. It will definitely control terrorist, destructive and illegal activities. This government does not have a reverse gear.”
He also took a swipe at those criticizing the government’s agreement with secessionist CK Raut and assured that there will be no referendum on the issue of territorial integrity of the country. “There has been a historic achievement. Secessionist and disintegrative ideologies and activities have been ended,” he stated.
“No country can even think of a referendum on the issue of sovereignty, nationalism and territorial integrity. Referendum on such issues is not possible at any cost,” he said.
He clarified that the Raut’s group earlier demanded a referendum but has now agreed that it will respect the people’s mandate.
CPN lawmaker and former home minister Bhim Rawal had claimed the language used in the agreement with Raut is not in accordance to the constitution and demanded a correction.
Oli also took swipe at Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Shashank Koirala for demanding a referendum on republicanism and federalism.
“I heard a friend who calls himself a democrat talk about referendum,” he said without naming Koirala. “I am baffled that someone still talks about referendum in support of the abolished monarchy. This republic has been achieved by shedding blood of the people and not received in alms. Nepalis will protect it.”
