Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Shashank Koirala has announced that he will contest for the post of party president in the 14th general convention.
Talking with News Agency Nepal on Monday, Koirala said he will contest to beat current President Sher Bahadur Deuba who looks set to seek reelection in the general convention scheduled to be held from February 19-22, 2021 in Kathmandu.
Koirala had won the election for general election in the 13th general convention from the faction of senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel who lost the election for the top post to Deuba.
Pointing that many including Paudel, Prakash Man Singh, Krishna Sitaula and others are expressing wishes to contest for the top post, he claimed that only he can defeat Deuba. "Personally speaking, if there is anyone who can beat Deuba that is me," he has claimed. "Even Ram Chandra Dai (elder brother) cannot. I can say with guarantee that there is no one else apart from me who can defeat Deuba."
He also expressed displeasure at the appointment spree of Deuba just six months before the next general convention, and accused Deuba of making arbitrary appointments. He claimed that his first work after becoming president will be to unite the party.
He added that he also believes that the general convention should not be postponed.
