The Mechi Eye Hospital at Sainikmode, Birtamod mtunicipality-3 in Jhapa district has started providing cornea transplant services by setting up a cornea collection center.
The availability of cornea transplant services in their district itself has elated the locals as they will no longer have to travel to Kathmandu for availing this service. This has brought cheers to the eye patients as well as to the people who want to donate their cornea posthumously.
The cornea collection center has been set up with the technical assistance of the Tilganga Health Institute and the Eye Bank. The eye hospital has, so far, carried out 151 cornea transplant operations, the hospital administration has stated.
Annually, 160,000 people from Nepal, India and Bhutan have been availing eye treatment and transplant services from the hospital. The hospital conducts 25,000 eye operations annually.
