Indian registered vehicles entering Nepali territory without paying tax has gone rampant in the Nepal-India bordering areas of Siraha district affecting revenue collection, said the district customs office.
However, the police are finding it hard to check this illegal entry of Indian number plate vehicles as those riding such vehicles illegally in Nepali territory have connection with the people in power, said a police official.
Political leaders, smugglers and entrepreneurs are among those who are using Indian number plate vehicles illegally in Nepali territory.
According to the laws, an Indian registered vehicle is allowed to ply 30 days in a year in Nepali territory by paying a certain tax amount. An Indian registered motorcycle is charged Rs 100 a day and a jeep and a car Rs 400 for operating in Nepali territory.
However, an Indian number plate vehicle plying the bordering areas in the day and returning in the evening is exempted of tax.
