Nepali Congress (NC) has appointed deputy parliamentary party leader Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar the party vice president on Tuesday.
President Sher Bahadur Deuba made the proposal in Tuesday's central committee meeting and he was unanimously elected vice president, NC Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma told Setopati. Deuba had sought help on the issue from leaders of his faction and had consulted senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel before Tuesday's meeting.
Gachchhadar, who had quit NC on February 1, 2008 and joined the then Madhesi Janadhikar Forum before the first Constituent Assembly election, had returned back after unification of his party Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic) with NC on October 16, 2017 before the provincial and federal elections.
The central committee has agreed to remove the statutory obstructions to appoint Gachchhadar. The upcoming mahasamiti meeting will make necessary amendments to endorse his appointment.
The NC party statute envisions only one vice president. Bimalendra Nidhi is the vice president now. Vice president must be an elected central committee member as per the party statute but Gachchhadar is an invited one having been nominated after party unification.
The Tuesday's central committee meeting also postponed the mahasamiti meeting scheduled for the third week of November. It will now be held from December 14-18 in Kathmandu.
