Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Shashank Koirala has said he will contest for the post of president in the 14th general convention to fulfill the dreams of the party's founder and his father BP Koirala.
Koirala, a doctor by training, claimed that he took a plunge into politics quitting the medical sector to fulfill his father's dreams. "I had to do politics to fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of BP. I have come into politics quitting the respected field of medicine," Koirala commented after attending the central committee meeting at the party office in Sanepa on Thursday. "I will definitely contest for president to fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of BP."
He added that he will move forward taking advice from fellow leaders as the general convention is still two years away.
He argued that everyone following BP's principles is competent for becoming president. "My colleagues who are continuously following BP's principles are all members of the Koirala family. Mine is just a relation of blood," he opined. "Many colleagues have said I should become president. But that alone does not suffice. It all will depend on what the opinion of our friends is."
He claimed that the mahasamiti meeting starting from Friday will inject pace into the party. "We will fight with the communists," he expressed determination. "We will bring every colleague at the ward level and the active cadres into the mainstream. The party will be well-managed," he assured.
He also pledged allegiance to the current president Sher Bahadur Deuba until the general convention. "I will support the current president now. I will move forward in accordance to the advice of colleagues later," he revealed.
