The then chief of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division of Nepal Police SSP Divesh Lohani has been arrested in connection to smuggling of 33 kilograms of gold and murder of Sanam Shakya.
Lohani, who reached District Police Office, Morang to give his statement on the case on Wednesday, has been arrested by the police.
The probe committee formed under Joint Secretary at the Home Ministry Ishwor Raj Paudel had earlier recommended Lohani be called back from duty finding his handling of the case suspicious. He was summoned to the headquarters from the CIB after that.
The committee had summoned him to Biratnagar to give statement. He has been handed arrest warrant by the police on arrival at the District Police Office.
He is the seventh serving and former police personnel to have been arrested in the case.
The issue of 33 kilograms of gold smuggled through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on January 23 came to the fore after the body of Sanam Shakya of Urlabari, who died while being tortured on charge of stealing that gold, was recovered in Biratnagar on March 2.
